2024: A Year of Adventure Around the Globe

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reminiscing about a whirlwind journey across some of the most vibrant and diverse destinations the world has to offer. From sipping Malbec in Argentina to hunting hobbits in New Zealand, each stop offered its own unique charm, culture, and experiences. I was blessed to explore 2 new continents, 14 countries (4 of which were new to me,) 2 new states, and so many new cities in my 85 travel days this year. Here’s a look back at a few of the highlights of my 2024 travels.

Argentina: Wine, Steak & Rugged Beauty in Mendoza

My year began in Mendoza, where my favorite climber descended the tallest mountain outside of Asia and met me to recover. Our days were spent among world famous wineries, Michelin star restaurants, and gorgeous and healing natural springs. Never a destination on my list before, but most definitely should be on yours!

Italy: Tuscany by Motorcycle

Of all my travels this year, the 7 days we spent adventuring through the Tuscan countryside on a Ducati Scrambler was easily my favorite! I’ve been to Italy many times, but the opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful parts in such a thrilling way made this trip one I’ll never forget. There was no shortage of Brunello wine, fresh pasta, and delicious gelato to enhance the experience even further.

Australia & New Zealand: Down Under Adventures

If you ever wondered why people might be enchanted by stories of fairies and other mystical creatures, seeing the glowworms in the Waitomo caves in New Zealand might explain it all. Otherworldly is how I would describe the experience. While in the Auckland region, I also got to visit the Hobbiton movie set. As someone who had never seen Lord of the Rings and really has no interest in such, I was so surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It is 100% touristy, but in the most charming way possible. Go see it. See what I mean. I think you’ll appreciate that you did.

On a second visit to Australia this year, I got to explore the Melbourne area. We spent time exploring the Great Ocean Road including 12 apostles, 9 of which are actually visible, a rainforest, and a beautiful gorge.

To do Australia and New Zealand justice, you’d certainly need many more days than what I spent, but I was incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit them even for only a few days this year.

Barcelona: Tapas and Taverns

Wandering through the Gothic Quarter on a small group tapas and taverns tour, I discovered hidden gems, from charming tapas bars to vibrant street art. A food tour is always one of my favorite ways to experience a new place, and although Barcelona wasn’t new to me, that was an excellent way to spend our brief time in the city.

Tokyo: Sushi and Shrines

Tokyo was a feast for the senses—neon-lit skyscrapers, serene temples, and sushi by conveyor belt. Ok, I didn’t eat it, but I loved experiencing it. Highlights included a visit to the Meiji Shrine, ascending the Sky Tree Tower, and getting lost in the crowd of the famous Shibuya Crossing. The thing that stood out most to me, though, was navigating the not for novices train system. Both trips to Tokyo were quite short but so sweet.

São Paulo: Good Food & Graffiti

In São Paulo, I experienced a small taste of Brazil’s energetic culture through it’s food and colorful graffiti-filled streets. We had one dinner at a Michelin star restaurant with a massive tree inside, another at a traditional churrascaria, and a surprising Italian lunch that was quite memorable. The second time I visited the city, I explored via bicycle tour and was able to see parts I had not yet ventured into. A bicycle tour is a great way to see more of a larger or more spread out city.

Hawaii: Birthday Surprise

I am the travel planner, so showing up to the airport knowing only that I was headed somewhere warm was quite the experience! Imagine my surprise to walk up to the gate to board the plane learning only in that moment that I was being whisked away to Oahu, Hawaii. Talk about a dreamy trip. I was treated to sunsets on Waikiki Beach, glorious meals, hiking Diamond Head, and exploring the island by jeep. When we recommend giving the gift of travel, it’s because moments like this will stick with a person far longer than any tangible gift in my opinion. And boy did I feel loved.

London: Indian Cuisine, Crown Jewels, and Christmas Markets

I was able to visit London a couple of times this year. The first trip, we were able to visit London Tower and basked in the glory of the Crown Jewels. I was more impressed than I thought I’d be and the ever charming tour guide James did an exceptional job of making the history come to life for us. Trip two involved several more days and a good bit more exploration. I made my way out to Oxford and the Cotswolds one day, took in the holiday festivities through the Christmas markets, and indulged in a little retail therapy on some of their finest shopping streets that were completely decked out for the season.

Lessons from a Year of Travel

2024 was more than just a collection of destinations; it was a journey of discovery. I learned to embrace spontaneity, appreciate diverse cultures, and find beauty in the everyday moments. Most of the year’s travels were thanks to one of my very favorite humans, so I definitely can’t take credit and I most certainly didn’t take the gift of 2024 travels for granted. Each place left a piece of itself with me, and I can’t wait to see where the world will take me in 2025.
